FOR SA is appealing the High Court judgment which removed “moderate and reasonable chastisement” as a common law defence that parents could use against a charge of assault, to the Constitutional Court.
FOR SA is not for or against smacking, but we do support the rights of parents to raise their own children according to their own moral or religious convictions. Assaulting a child has always been illegal, but now even the lightest slap on the wrist can result in a charge of assault and a criminal record. Criminalising loving and well intentioned parents is NOT in the best interests of the child and the family!
